前出塞九首·其六的译文及注释
译文及注释：
拉弓要拉最坚硬的，射箭要射最长的。射人先要射马，擒贼先要擒住他们的首领。
Translation: When pulling a bow one should pull the strongest; when shooting arrows one should shoot the longest. When shooting at people first shoot their horses; when capturing thieves first capture their leaders.
杀人要有限制，各个国家都有边界。只要能够制止敌人的侵犯就可以了，难道打仗就是为了多杀人吗？
Translation: Killing should be limited and every country has its own borders. As long as we can stop the enemy's invasion it is enough. Is war really about killing more people?
注释：
挽：拉。
Translation: 挽 means to pull.
当：应当。
Translation: 当 means should.
长：指长箭。
Translation: 长 refers to long arrows.
擒：捉拿。
Translation: 擒 means to capture.
前四句极像谣谚，可能是当时军中流行的作战歌诀。马目标大易射，马倒则人非死即伤，故先射马，蛇无头而不行，王擒则贼自溃散，故先擒王。擒王句乃主意所在，下四句便是引伸这一句的。
Translation: The first four sentences resemble a folk proverb and may have been a popular military battle chant at that time. Horses are easier to shoot due to their larger target and if the horse falls the person will either be killed or injured. Therefore it is better to shoot the horse first. A snake cannot move without its head and if the leader is captured the thieves will disperse on their own. Therefore it is better to capture the leader first. The sentence about capturing the leader is the main idea and the following four sentences are an extension of this idea.
亦有限：是说也有个限度，有个主从。正承上句意。沈德潜《杜诗偶评》：“诸本杀人亦有限，惟文待诏（文徵明）作杀人亦无限，以开合语出之，较有味。”不确。
Translation: 亦有限 means there is also a limit a hierarchy. It is in line with the meaning of the previous sentence. Shen Deqian's Occasional Comments on Du Shi says Various versions say that killing should also have limits but Wen Zhengming's version says that killing has no limits which is more interesting. This interpretation is not certain.
列国：各国。
Translation: 列国 means various countries.
疆：边界。
Translation: 疆 means border.
自有疆，是说总归有个疆界，饶你再开边。和前出塞诗第一首中的“开边一何多”照应。
Translation: 自有疆 means there will always be a border no matter how much it expands. This echoes the line 开边一何多 from the first poem about going out to the frontier.
苟能：如果能。
Translation: 若能 means if one can.
侵陵：侵犯。
Translation: 侵陵 means invasion.
岂：难道。
Translation: 岂 means is it possible or can it be that.
最后两句是说如果能抵制外来侵略的话，那末只要擒其渠魁就行了，又哪在多杀人呢？张远《杜诗会粹》：“大经济语，借戍卒口中说出。”在这里我们相当明显的看到杜甫的政治观点。
Translation: The last two sentences mean that if one can resist foreign aggression then it is enough to capture their leader so why kill more people? Zhang Yuan's The Essence of Du Shi's Poetry says This is a great economical language spoken by soldiers on the front lines. Here we can clearly see Du Fu's political viewpoint.
