The cold winter season is responding eagerly awaiting the early rise of the sun. The six leaves of the clover in front of the steps have already grown it is already the sixth day. The winter sun has just risen dawn is breaking and spring is not far away. It is at this time that you (referring to the birthday person) were born into a prestigious family and your family considers you as a precious gem. You possess exceptional beauty virtuous character and good upbringing and you married a good husband. Now you live in a splendid palace filled with children and grandchildren and each one of them is a successful and influential person.
How glorious it is! Your family members have entered the imperial court each holding a golden seal and wearing a green sash ranking among the top officials. But what is even more delightful is that your two sons the brothers are constantly blessed. They hold the tiger token and ride in a bear-drawn carriage becoming local governors. Their future is limitless and soon they will rise to higher positions becoming important ministers relied upon by the emperor. Look the two brothers are dressed in colorful clothes coming forward to wish you a long life offering you delicious food and fine wine. Congratulations on reaching the age of one hundred living as long as the pine and cypress trees.
Annotations:
Changshou Le is the name of the song. It is a birthday congratulatory poem written for a noble lady with the title Nanchang. Xu Peijun believed in Annotations and Evidence on Two Ci Poems by Li Qingzhao that it was written by Li Qingzhao for Han Xiaozhou's mother.
Yinghou means responding to the season.
Liu Ye Jie Ming Chu Xiu means that the clover in front of the steps has grown six leaves. According to legend this plant grows one leaf on the first day of the lunar month. It is considered the sixth day when it has grown six leaves.
Ai Jing means the light of winter. Chu Xue Ji in Chu Xue Ji Sui Shi Bu Shang Dong Si by Du Yu: Du Yu's annotation on 'Zuo Zhuan' says: Winter sun is lovable summer sun is awe-inspiring. Jing means sun. Fusang is a large tree in the place where the sun rises according to legend. Shan Hai Jing Hai Wai Dong Jing: There is a Fusang tree on the top of Tang Valley where the sun bathes for ten days. Guo Pu's annotation: Fusang is a tree.
Lou Can Yin Jian refers to the time when the sky is about to dawn. Lou Can means that the water in the water clock is about to run out. Yin Jian refers to the scale marked with degrees used in the water clock.
Shao Hui Yao Dou means that the handle of the dipper is turning east indicating that spring is coming. Shao refers to the fifth sixth and seventh stars of the Big Dipper. It is also called the handle of the dipper or the Shao star.
Gao Hong means a prestigious family.
Pou means to be born.
Gui means to get married.
Zhou Jin originally meant a noble person returning to their hometown. Shi Ji Xiang Yu Ben Ji: Wealth and nobility do not return to their hometown like walking at night in brocade clothes who knows? Here it may refer to the Zhou Jin Hall built by Han Qi. Song Shi Han Xiaozhou Zhuan: Qi served as prime minister and built the Zhou Jin Hall which was well-managed.
