竹初种时，用棘条编成篱笆，小心谨慎保护好新竹，新竹长成，碧绿浓荫，倒映在水之涟漪中。
When bamboo is first planted it is protected with fences made of thorns carefully and cautiously. The newly grown bamboo becomes lush and green reflecting in the ripples of the water.
夏日的清风吹过地面，好像秋天提前而至，赤日当空，也不感到正午的炎热。
The summer breeze blows over the ground as if autumn has come early. The scorching sun is high in the sky yet it doesn't feel as hot as noon.
笋壳脱落时，听到簌簌悉悉的声音，竹子拔节时，初现疏疏落落的倩影。
When the bamboo shoots shed their shells you can hear the rustling sound. As the bamboo grows it reveals a sparse and scattered silhouette.
退归闲暇的时候，我经常来这里，来的时候仍然随身带着枕头和竹席，好随地安眠。
In my leisure time I often come here. When I come I still bring a pillow and a bamboo mat with me so I can sleep anywhere.

插棘编篱：即用荆棘编成篱笆。指开始种竹时的情况。棘，有刺的草木。
