The ice and snow cut the skin like a knife and the strong wind never stops.
方圆百里不见人烟,草木茂盛却没有人来管理?
There is no sign of human habitation within a hundred miles but the vegetation is flourishing without anyone to manage it?
登上城楼遥望烽火台,只见满城飘动的都是猎猎招展的战旗。
Climbing up the city wall and looking at the beacon tower from afar all I see are the fluttering war flags throughout the city.
行军的人不准备再返回家园,出门时就已经与家人作了长别。
The marching soldiers are not prepared to return home anymore as they have bid farewell to their families when they left.
几个孩子都已经被敌方俘虏了,我们为此已经哭了好长时间。
Several children have already been captured by the enemy and we have cried for a long time because of this.
天下可供安居乐业的地方很多,何苦一直在这个地方呆下去呢?
There are many places in the world where people can live and work in peace and happiness. Why do we have to stay in this place?
这就像蓼草上的虫子长期吃辣一样,边城的人习惯了这种生活,不要再谈离开边城的事。
It's like the insects on the water pepper getting used to the spiciness. The people in the border town have become accustomed to this life so let's not talk about leaving the border town anymore.

更(gēng):经历。
Geng: to experience.
截:截取,引申为冻伤。
Jie: to cut off metaphorically refers to frostbite.
迟:治理。
Chi: to govern.
亭燧(suì):古代筑在边境上的烽火亭,用作侦伺和举火报警。
Ting Sui: an ancient beacon tower built on the border used for surveillance and signaling.
翩翩飞戍旗:戍边的旗子翩翩起飞。
Pianpian fei shu qi: the flags of the border defense fluttering in the wind.
行者:逃难的人。
Xingzhe: refugees.
反,同“返”,返回。
Fan: same as fan to return.
乐土:安乐的地方。见《诗经·硕鼠》“硕鼠硕鼠,无食我黍!三岁贯汝,莫我肯顾。逝将去女,适彼乐土。乐土乐土,爰得我所。”
Le tu: a peaceful place. From Shi Jing - Shuo Shu: The rat the rat does not eat my millet! Three years have passed and you have not looked back. I am about to leave to go to that peaceful place. A peaceful place a peaceful place where I can find what I want.
兹(zī):此,这里。
Zi: here in this place.
蓼(liǎo)虫:吃惯了蓼(一种有辣昧的草)的虫子已经不感到蓼是辣的了,比喻人为了所好就会不辞辛苦。蓼:水蓼,植物名,味辛辣。
Liao chong: insects that are used to eating water pepper (a spicy plant) no longer feel the spiciness of the water pepper. It metaphorically means that people will endure hardships for their own interests. Liao: water pepper a plant with a spicy taste.
谘(zī):同“咨”。征询,商议。
Zi: same as zi to consult to discuss.
