Seeing the ripe plums in the garden I invite Zhu Lao to taste them when they are ripe; seeing the pine trees in front of the hall I hope to have a lively discussion with Ruan Sheng under the shade of the pines.
I originally wanted to build a fish weir but suddenly dark clouds covered the rushing stream and then I was surprised by the cold rain in April.
Perhaps there are dragons living in the Qingxi River and even though the bamboo and stones used to build the embankment are piled up like mountains I dare not take any more risks.
The orioles sing of spring among the green willow branches celebrating in pairs; the egrets fly in a row welcoming the spring breeze and soaring into the blue sky their formation neat and beautiful.
The snow-capped peaks of the Xiling Mountains are like a beautiful painting embedded in the window frame; the ships in front of the door have come from the distant Dongwu.
The branches and leaves of the medicinal herbs grow lush and green their green color spreading from the brown pavilion to the grass pavilion.
I am unworthy of the reputation of Miao Man Kong Shan (meaning the beauty of the mountains and the wilderness) I am afraid that they cannot take shape in the dry soil where they are rooted.

Pepper trees: Rows of pepper trees.
Zhu Lao Ruan Sheng: Friends of Du Fu in Chengdu referring to ordinary neighbors and friends; later commonly used as an allusion to praising close friends.
Fish weir: A facility for trapping fish by building a dam made of wooden stakes branches or nets placed in rivers. However because the water here is treacherous (In the Qingxi River there are dragons' dens) it is said that even though the bamboo and stones are piled up like mountains it is not safe to build.
Qingxi: Clear and green stream.
Orioles: Golden orioles.
Egrets: Herons with pure white feathers capable of flying high.
Window frame: Refers to looking out of the window towards the Xiling Mountains as if they are embedded in the window frame hence the phrase the window contains.
Xiling: Refers to the Min Mountains in the southwest of Chengdu where the snow never melts hence the phrase the snow of a thousand autumns. This is an imaginative expression.
Dongwu: Refers to the area around Jiangsu in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Chengdu is connected to the Yangtze River by waterways hence the phrase ships from the Yangtze River thousands of miles away.
Medicinal herbs: Refers to the cultivation of medicinal plants. Wang Sishuang's Du Yi says Du Fu often suffers from various illnesses so wherever he goes he must plant medicinal herbs hence the phrase planting herbs to support declining health.
Brown pavilion grass pavilion: Refers to the large medicinal garden. Du Fu suffered from various diseases so wherever he went he needed to plant herbs to treat his illnesses.
Cracked land: Land with numerous cracks.
Take shape: Refers to the shape formed by the roots of medicinal plants such as ginseng.
