迷离的月色下，轻烟笼罩寒水、白沙，小船夜泊秦淮，靠近岸边酒家。
Under the hazy moonlight light smoke envelops the cold water and white sand. The small boat docks on the Qinhuai River at night close to the riverside tavern.
卖唱为生的歌女为人作乐，哪知亡国之恨？隔着江水仍然高唱着《玉树后庭花》。
The singing girl who makes a living by singing brings joy to others. Who would have known the sorrow of a fallen nation? Across the river she still sings the song Yushu Hou Ting Hua (Flowers in the Back Courtyard of the Jade Tree).

Selected from Feng Jiwu's Fan Chuan Collection Volume Four (Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House 1978 edition). Qinhuai also known as the Qinhuai River originates between the Damao Mountain in Jurong Jiangsu and the Donglu Mountain in Lishui. It flows through Nanjing and into the Yangtze River. According to legend it was excavated during Emperor Qin Shi Huang's southern inspection of Kuaiji to dredge the Huai River hence the name Qinhuai River.
泊: to anchor or dock.
商女: a singing girl who makes a living by singing.
犹: adverb. still yet.
后庭花: a shortened name for the song Yushu Hou Ting Hua. During the Southern Chen Dynasty Emperor Chen Shubao (also known as Chen Houzhu) indulged in pleasure and composed this song to seek pleasure with the beauties in the palace ultimately leading to the downfall of the nation. Therefore this song is known as the sound of a fallen nation in later generations.
